Compute Runs on Minerals: Mapping AI’s Critical Mineral Exposure in the Age of Pax Silica

Toronto, ON, Toronto, Canada
In person

Every frontier model runs on minerals. Behind the GPUs, the servers, the cooling systems and the power infrastructure that make up a data centre sit gallium, germanium, rare earths, copper, tungsten and a dozen other inputs whose mining and refining are concentrated in a small number of countries. Countries like China, that have weaponized that dominance, restricting exports of gallium, germanium, graphite and rare earth magnets, and each time targeting a material critical to AI. Demonstrating how a supply chain chokepoint becomes a tool of statecraft. What exactly is AI infrastructure, which minerals does it depend on, and where is control over those minerals heading? In this talk, Noah Chaikin works through the AI value chain from the mine to data centre and applies a foresight lens to what he finds. He argues that mapping critical mineral exposure across that chain is the first step toward securing North American supply, and points to Pax Silica, the US-led initiative to build a trusted AI supply chain among allies, as a live example of governments now trying to do exactly that. Drawing on his work at Kearney Foresight in geopolitical statecraft and his research on Canadian rare earth supply chains, he closes with scenarios for how mining, refining and AI investment could converge over the next decade, and what that could mean for Canada. Please treat everyone with respect. Harassment and discrimination are not tolerated. If something comes up, reach us at feedback@trajectorylabs.org or find any staff member on site.

Josette Melchor // Newtemporary: Designing in the Space Between New and Next

Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation, Berkeley, United States
In person

Join us Tuesday, September 15th at 5:30 PM for a talk with Josette Melchor, founder and cultural strategist working across art, technology, cities, and responsible AI. As the founder of Gray Area and now Newtemporary — and a board member of the Burning Man Project — Josette has spent her career shaping experiences that connect emerging technologies with civic life, cultural infrastructure, and public imagination. Her work moves fluidly across spatial strategy, immersive media, curation, and systems thinking, always with an eye toward how culture and technology evolve together. In this talk, Josette will explore the idea behind Newtemporary, the notion that everything from culture to place to technology is always in transition. She will share how this perspective informs her work with cities, developers, and cultural organizations, from designing immersive experiences and public spaces to prototyping ethical and creative uses of AI. Drawing on projects that have ranged from large-scale festivals and artist exhibitions to global placemaking programs for Google, she will reflect on how design can respond to impermanence, support community meaning-making, and help shape the cultural infrastructure of the future. This event is free and open to the public. .................... Design Field Notes is a lecture series where we invite the public to the UC Berkeley campus for conversations with designers, makers and artists who are contributing to shaping the future through design. If you require accommodation for a disability for effective communication (ASL interpreting/CART captioning, alternative media formats, etc.) or information about campus mobility access features in order to fully participate in this event, please contact Jacobs Institute staff at jacobsinstitute@berkeley.edu with as much advance notice as possible and at least 7-10 days in advance of the event.

Crossing the Fiat–Crypto Boundary: Basel III, Compliance and Control

Rosewood Hong Kong, Hong Kong
In person

UPDATE: due to overwhelming demand, this event is now at capacity! Please register anyway to join the waiting list and we'll notify you if a seat is available. Thank you for your interest! Hong Kong has moved beyond the question of whether crypto should be regulated. The harder question is how banks, securities firms, exchanges, and stablecoin payment providers make different regulatory regimes and control systems work together. Basel III shapes how banks approach cryptoasset exposure. Securities and virtual asset firms face their own licensing, custody, and market-conduct obligations. Across the chain, compliance teams must detect financial crime using customer records, fiat transactions, wallet activity, and blockchain data that rarely sit in the same system. One panel. Every side of the fiat–crypto boundary. These speakers have sat on every side of the table: regulating financial markets, leading compliance inside banks and securities firms, operating global crypto exchanges, advising law enforcement, and applying those rules to stablecoin payments. Angelina Kwan, CEO at Stratford Finance Limited, formerly Global COO at BitMEX and HashKey Group, HKEX, and SFC. Avina Lobo, Regulatory Compliance Lead at Reap, formerly Animoca Brands and Bitget Debra Au, Co-chair of Global Coalition Fighting for Financial Crime APAC and Cyber Crime Policing Advisory Panel Member at Hong Kong Police Force. Previously Head of Financial Crime at HSBC HK, Societe Generale, and DBS. Lorraine Li, Head of Compliance at Mirae Asset Securities. Previously Head of Compliance Advisory at HSBC HK. Moderated by Teodora Irimia, Senior Account Executive, Flagright Together, they will examine: Who monitors a transaction that passes through a bank, exchange, stablecoin provider, and self-hosted wallet? But I've always been around products, working out what to solve and why. What I couldn't do was code and build the thing myself. Now I can, so I'm building Grocero, a grocery price comparison app for Australian supermarkets. There's a frontend for iOS and Android, a backend with scrapers, an API, and a landing page to make the marketing side work. Claude Code wrote all of it while I was orchestrating. I'll walk you through the workflow that got it there. It starts with the early idea in my head and a lot of chats with Claude the sceptic, and it ends with the specific setup I use to make sure nothing gets exposed that shouldn't be. Marketing is in there too, since I'm going after organic traffic instead of paying for ads. Spoiler alert: building turned out to be the easy part. Judgement is the hard part, and I'll show you how I make it work. Staff Product Designer at Propeller, working on geospatial software for construction industry. Outside of work I build and ship real apps with Claude Code, without writing the code myself. Nudget, a job application tracker, is live on the App Store. Builders' Breakfast with Sami Marttinen: Building Pre-AI vs. Building Now

Maria 01, Helsinki, Finland
In person

This Builders' Breakfast session is part of the Maria 01 NEXT Startup Festival. Explore the full 2-day program here. Sami Marttinen co-founded a company that most founders only talk about reaching: a centaur, meaning a private company generating over $100 million in annual revenue. Swappie crossed that threshold in 2023 and has held it since, closing 2025 with €234 million in revenue and, for the first time, a full year of EBITDA profitability. Getting there wasn't a straight line. Before Swappie, Sami and his co-founder ran through thirteen different business ideas under one company, pivoting quickly, taking no salary, and funding the process themselves through student loans and savings. The idea that eventually became Swappie came from a personal experience, being scammed while buying a used phone online, and a consumer survey the next day that suggested the market for used electronics could eventually rival the market for used cars. Sami is now building a new company, currently in stealth. This time, the environment is different. Swappie was built in a pre-AI era, with none of the tools founders now take for granted. His new venture is being built with AI shaping the process from the outset. At this Builders' Breakfast, Sami will share the story on what it took to grow Swappie into a centaur, and how building pre-AI compares to building now. If you find this session interesting, we invite you to explore the full Maria 01 NEXT Startup Festival Program.

This is exactly that. Whether you're a Claude newbie or a longtime veteran, everyone is welcome. Come celebrate the festival the way it's meant to be celebrated: outdoors, together, with good company. Building AI That Works: A Hands-On Simulation of Success and Failure

ETH AI Center, Zürich, Switzerland
In person

Most organizations are no longer experimenting with AI - they are trying to scale it. And this is where things start to break. Despite strong models and successful pilots, many AI initiatives fail to deliver real value. Not because the technology doesn’t work, but because success is not well defined, measured and managed in real-world conditions. In this interactive session, participants will step into a simulated AI transformation scenario, making decisions under real constraints such as data limitations, cost pressure, user behavior and governance requirements. Through this exercise, we will uncover why AI systems that “work” in demos often fail in reality and what it actually takes to build systems that are measurable, reliable and worth scaling. +++ This event is part of the Zurich AI Festival, taking place from September 28 to October 3, 2026. Sober Wiesn!

Bavaria Statue, Munich, Germany
In person

Experience the world's famous Oktoberfest with a fresh perspective! We are not avoiding fun, we want to amplify it. The goal is to connect, celebrate, and showcase that the best part of the Wiesn is not the consumption, but the connections you make. 📅 Date: 3.10.2026 🕙 Time: 10:30 AM 📍 Meeting Point: Bavaria Statue, Theresienhöhe 16, Munich (Exact Spot: https://share.google/UhwYsr7tbGG6PGFqF) 🎟️ Entry: Free to meet up. Everyone pays for their own consumption (we might need to pay the 4€ entrance fee for the Oide Wiesn) By joyfully participating in events like this without alcohol, we help normalize mindful choices and demonstrate that true connection comes from shared experiences, not shared drinks. 🥨 What to Expect 10:30 AM: We'll gather at the iconic Bavaria statue for a meet-and-greet and a fantastic group photo in our traditional outfits (Tracht). Our Plan: The goal is to head to the Oide Wiesn (Old Oktoberfest), a charming, more traditional section of the festival with a relaxed atmosphere. The entry fee is typically €4 and is well worth it for the more manageable crowds. Flexibility is Key: If we spot a great, large-enough space in an outdoor beer garden on our way, we’ll take it! Our priority is finding a place to sit together, talk, and enjoy the morning. The Vibe: Expect relaxed networking, great conversations, and a supportive atmosphere where enjoying an alcohol-free beer is completely normal. 📝 Important Details Finding Us: We will meet directly at the linked spot at the base of the statue. Costs: This is a casual meetup. Please be prepared to pay for your own food, drinks, and the Oide Wiesn entry ticket. Outfits: Wearing Tracht (Dirndl or Lederhosen) is highly encouraged to get into the festive spirit, but it's not required! Good to Know: Yes, every single tent and beer garden on the Wiesn serves excellent alcohol-free beer! Come for the tradition. Stay for the connection. Inspi'Her : Inspirer les femmes qui font la Tech, le Produit & l'IA

La Cristallerie, Paris, France
In person
