The Science of Rom-Coms: What Does Your Favorite Rom-Com Actually Get Right About Love? *Le Love Club collab!*

LowBrau, Sacramento, United States
In person

This is a collab event with Le Love Club, a social club that curates events and facilitates connection for love in all its forms. Instead of our normal Q&A, you can enjoy a post-lecture discussion where you're matched with other attendees based on compatibility. After registration, you'll receive a link to complete the compatibility survey. Please complete prior to lecture. ✨ What if your favorite rom-com has been teaching you about love all along—but not always getting the science right? Join Dr. Paul Eastwick, Professor of Psychology at UC Davis, head of the Social-Personality Psychology program, and director of the Attraction and Relationships Research Laboratory, for a scientific look at what Hollywood gets right—and wrong—about love. Rom-coms and romantic films have given us some of our most enduring ideas about attraction: love strikes like a bolt of lightning, women want commitment more than men, and somewhere out there is the perfect person just waiting to be found. But how well do these familiar stories hold up when we put them to the scientific test? Drawing on decades of relationship research, Paul will explore what we actually know about how attraction develops, who seeks out relationships, and whether lasting love is more about finding the perfect match—or creating one over time. Along the way, we’ll put films like Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Barbie, Materialists, and La La Land under the microscope to see where Hollywood romance aligns with real relationship science…and where it takes a few creative liberties. Paul Eastwick is a Professor of Psychology at UC Davis, where he heads the Social-Personality Psychology program and directs the Attraction and Relationships Research Laboratory. He is the author of Bonded by Evolution: The New Science of Love and Connection and co-host of the Love Factually podcast, where he and longtime collaborator Eli Finkel analyze rom-coms and romantic dramas through the lens of

Fridgeside! An evening with former Mayor Steve Adler (founders)

The Red Fridge Society, Austin, United States
In person

For eight years, Steve Adler ran the fastest-growing large metro in America — a streak almost no city in U.S. history has matched. Now, in his new book Hot Seat — Hot City: The Austin Mayor's Story, Austin's two-term mayor pulls back the curtain on what it actually takes to lead a city through explosive growth. Mayor Adler makes a case every founder in this room will recognize: Austin's real superpower is its tolerance for risk — a city where the civic heroes are the ones who try, fail, adapt, and try again. As laid out in the book, Steve will talk about what really happened in the “Uber/Lyft” war, homelessness, police funding and race, and whatever else attendees want to raise. It’s available now on Amazon. He’ll sign copies if you bring one (and I have a few copies for our Fridge Members). Join us Fridgeside for drinks and a candid conversation with Mayor Adler. Happy hour from 5-5:45, Discussion 5:45-6:45, and more casual conversation after.

Design systems that appeared as a result of Atomic design methodology, invented by Brad Frost, changed the product creation process by building the working workflow between developers and designers, and introducing the great way of maintaining the design elements. Design systems help teams ship consistent, high-quality UI by providing shared language, reusable parts, and guardrails across design and engineering. But the main problem appeared with their maintenance. Now AI is here whether we're ready or not. It's powerful — and that means it can make a huge mess when it collides with an organization's standards, constraints, and realities. Or opposite — to bring the process to the next level of success. At the event we'll talk how to combine those forces: use AI with design systems to strengthen foundations, improve product work, and responsibly explore what's next. Schedule 14:00 Open gates 14:30 Lecture about Design Systems 14:45 Interactive interview with Brad Frost 16:00 Networking at some bar The event is FREE to join. Also there is an option to watch event online https://bradfrost.prjctr.com/ See you soon!

DreamHER – Sport and Science: A Dialogue Across Generations

POLIMI Graduate School of Management, Milano, Italy
In person

Tapahtuma on maksuton. PechaKucha @ Arts x Tech Lab - Future Soul

Aliwal Arts Centre, Singapore
In person

What happens when art and technology become tools for imagining the city of tomorrow? Future Soul brings together women whose practices exist across art, technology, design and culture, each working between disciplines, mediums and ways of thinking. Their hybrid practices span urban futures and cultural strategy, science and storytelling, digital worlds and new media, moving image and experimental forms of making. Together, they explore how crossing boundaries between fields can open up new ways of seeing, making and interacting with the world around us. Moving between the institutional and the experimental, the physical and the digital, the human and the technological, the speakers consider how hybrid creative practices can shape not only the technologies we develop, but the cultures, experiences and cities we build around them. At its heart, Future Soul asks: As our cities become increasingly technological, how do we ensure they retain their soul? Registration is from 7.00pm-7.30pm. Light refreshments will be provided before the session. Please come on time. Late entry will be managed at suitable intervals between speakers. Guest programmer Deborah Lim Deborah Lim is an independent curator exploring how intersections and hybridities shape new ways of viewing and experiencing culture.
