About this event

It's Hacktober 👻
That means it's time for another spooooky celebration of open source software with the PHL Code Club and a few other communities at Indy Hall.
How it works
We are still ironing out the details but here is the overview:
Over the course of October submit 3 high quality pull/merge requests to open source projects of your choosingWe will have a fun prize for anyone who completes all 3!
High quality does not mean large or complex, it just means useful. Please don't spam project maintainers with junk.
This is specifically an LLM/Generative AI free event. The goal is not only to improve the software you love, but also improve your skills and knowledge while you're at it.
Go to hacktoberfest.phlcode.club and share projects you are interested in working on!This is a great place to find inspiration for projects or try to recruit others to work on a project you find interesting
We will be hosting some online "hack sessions" for people to body double and pair program. Keep an eye on the Luma for these. Also come to the Indy Hall Neighborhood Coworking Nights to hack together in person!!
Come share what you worked on at the party on the 26th!Costumes are highly encouraged.
Go ahead and RSVP now, plan out your costume, and keep an eye out for updates both as blasts from Luma or in our Discord.

So excited to have another year of our fun with you all. May you avoid the scariest thing of all - MERGE CONFLICTS O.O

Emerging Research in Cislunar Space and How to Get Involved

Pennovation Center, Philadelphia, United States · Coffee & Code Philly
In person

This workshop will introduce NASA’s upcoming Artemis missions, emerging research areas in cislunar space, and opportunities for programmers, engineers, students, and space enthusiasts to contribute to humanity’s return to the Moon. Participants will learn the fundamentals of orbital motion, reference frames, trajectory design, and orbit propagation before exploring current research in cislunar space situational awareness, lunar landing and descent, and space robotics. The session will conclude with a short Python demonstration of selenocentric orbit propagation using planetary ephemerides. The workshop will be led by Scott Blender, a third-year Ph.D. student in aerospace engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and a researcher in the Advanced Space Concepts Laboratory. His research focuses on spacecraft guidance, cislunar space domain awareness, and lunar-surface sensor networks. He previously interned at AstronetX, a startup developing an optical system for cislunar space situational awareness. The workshop will be organized as follows: 1. NASA’s Return to the Moon Through Artemis 2. Fundamentals of Orbital Motion: Kepler’s Laws and Newtonian Gravitation 3. Two-Body Orbit Propagation, Reference Frames, and Selenocentric Orbits 4. Emerging Cislunar Research: Space Situational Awareness, Lunar Landing and Descent, and Space Robotics 5. Live Python Demonstration: Ephemeris-Supported Orbit Propagation 6. Q&A and Opportunities to Get Involved

Claude Code vs. Codex: Loops, Graphs, and Harnesses

Turkish Brew, Philadelphia, United States · Coffee & Code Philly
In person

## Claude Code vs. Codex: Loops, Graphs, and Harnesses This is a casual pair-programming meetup for developers experimenting with Claude Code, Codex, and agentic coding workflows. There is no formal presentation and no fixed curriculum. Bring a laptop, a repository, a side project, or a workflow you want to test. We will work in small groups, compare approaches, debug problems, and share what is working. Possible areas to explore include: Building iterative coding-agent loops Comparing Claude Code and Codex on the same task Designing graph-based agent workflows Creating reusable coding harnesses Managing context across large repositories Running tests and validating agent-generated changes Using sandboxes, permissions, and approval steps Coordinating subagents or parallel tasks Measuring latency, token usage, cost, and completion quality Debugging failed or incomplete agent runs You do not need to be an expert in either tool. This meetup is for people who want hands-on time to experiment, pair with other developers, and learn through building. Bring something you are working on, or join someone else’s project.
