Massachusetts was building robots before it was a category. The labs are here. The hardware is here. The people who have actually made machines work outside a lab are here. FieldAI Coffee Talks is a morning meetup for them. Two hours, good coffee, and the conversations that usually only happen after the demo breaks. Perception and controls engineers, researchers, founders, operators, students — anyone building embodied AI in Greater Boston, or curious about what happens when a robot leaves the lab and the map runs out. About FieldAI FieldAI is building one autonomy for all robots — and a growing share of that work happens here. Our founders' research roots run through MIT, NASA JPL, and DARPA's underground challenges, and our R&D organization is now based in Boston, next door to the labs and hardware companies that made this region robotics' center of gravity. The team came from DeepMind, JPL, Boston Dynamics, NVIDIA, Zoox, Cruise, Toyota Research Institute, and SpaceX. What we're building: Field Foundation Models™ — physics-first, risk-aware foundation models designed from the ground up for embodied intelligence, not retrofitted from vision or language. In practice that means perception, planning, localization, and manipulation with explainability and safety treated as first-class constraints, plus multi-robot simulation and fleet orchestration. The goal is robots that work in unstructured, GPS-denied environments with no prior maps and no predefined paths — one brain, many embodiments, many tasks. We're hiring in Boston. Frogmageddon: The real Friends were the Frogs we made along the way You may have heard whispers of the game. Just a couple of young scrappy upstarts jamming on frogs. In this edition of Boston Indies, Manny Mallea will extoll the virtues of making a game with frogs, putting yourself out there (marketing), and the journey thus far. Begin to congregate at 6:00. Boston Computational Biology Hackathon Hosted by Anthropic, Modal, and Flagship Pioneering Spend a day building computational biology tools and workflows with the Anthropic, Modal, and Flagship Pioneering teams. The challenge: Build a tool for running computational biology workflows in the cloud with Modal x Claude Science: autoresearch, molecular design, data scraping and processing, or any computationally heavy workload you want to automate with agents. Inspiration: Build beyond the bench: start from a user in the life sciences you can name – a scientist, a clinic, a biotech – and use Claude Science to create the tool they're missing. Protein function: Run large protein language models, structure prediction, and large-scale homology/domain searches to characterize unknown proteins.Input: Protein sequence (FASTA). Output: Predicted function, domains, homologs, structural insights, and confidence scores. Drug discovery: Integrate large multimodal datasets and run large-scale target scoring, virtual screening, or model inference across many genes and compounds.Input: Disease, phenotype, or gene set. Output: Ranked targets or drug candidates with scores and supporting evidence. Imaging & phenotyping: Process high-content microscopy datasets with segmentation, image embeddings, phenotype discovery, and large-scale inference across millions of cells or images.Input: Microscopy images. Output: Detected phenotypes, cell/image embeddings, segmentation results, and QC metrics. Biology knowledge graph: Build and analyze large biological graphs using entity embeddings, multi-hop graph search, graph algorithms, link prediction, and LLM-based reasoning over large numbers of relationships.Input: Gene, protein, disease, drug, or biological question. One day. Real genomic questions. Build agents that do useful scientific work, then show the room what they found. AI agents can plan multi-step work, call tools, run analyses and recover from failure. Biology is where that gets hard: results must be reproducible, evidence must be traceable, and an agent must know when it cannot support a claim. ClawBio is open-source infrastructure for that work. Its versioned skills make an agent's methods inspectable, reproducible and open to challenge. Boston is modelled on the latest ClawBio hackathon in Berlin, with the format improved using what we learned there: setup before arrival, one clear help route, faster team formation and more protected build time. Everything runs through Slack The ClawBio Slack community is where we work before, during and after the event.
