FoundrPwr - Building Exceptional Teams ft. Phanindra Sama (RedBus)

OCT8
17:45 · Asia / Kolkata

About this event

Few decisions shape a startup as lastingly as its first twenty hires. Those people set the pace, the standards and the culture that everyone after them inherits. Yet most founders build their early teams through instinct and urgency rather than design.
For the next edition of FoundrPwr, Mela Ventures is hosting Phanindra (Phani) Sama, co-founder and former CEO of redBus, for a conversation on building exceptional teams.

Phani built redBus from a small team of engineers into a company that led India's online bus ticketing market and became one of the country's earliest notable startup exits.

He brings an unusually wide view of talent. As an angel investor and advisor, he has watched teams form and grow across many early-stage companies. Through his work in youth skilling, he has also seen how capable professionals are developed from the ground up.
What the conversation will cover
What distinguishes great early teams, and how founders can assemble one before they have a brand, a large budget or a proven product
How to attract strong people to an unproven company, and what keeps them there once the early excitement fades
The practices, norms and structures founders should put in place from the start
How hiring, leadership and culture need to change as a startup grows from a handful of people into a larger organisation
Who should attend
Founders of early-stage companies
Founders making their first key hires or preparing to scale their teams
Operators and early employees building functions within startups
About the speaker
Phanindra Sama co-founded redBus in 2006 after he could not find a bus ticket home from Bengaluru one Diwali weekend. He led the company as CEO until its acquisition by the ibibo Group in 2013. He later served as Chief Innovation Officer for the Government of Telangana.
Much of Phani's recent work has focused on preparing young people for employment. He co-founded Kakatiya Sandbox, which supports innovation, entrepreneurship and skill development in

Fruit Fly-athon

166,000 neurons. 125 million connections. One day to see what they can do. Fruit Fly-athon is a one-day hackathon for creating games, research tools, simulations, robots, visualizations, and experimental applications powered by the mapped nervous system of a real fruit fly. The Source Google Research, HHMI Janelia, and collaborators recently released the complete connectome of an adult male fruit fly. A connectome is essentially a circuit diagram of the nervous system. It maps how more than 166,000 neurons connect through 125 million synapses, from sensory inputs such as sight and smell to outputs controlling movement and behaviour. The Format A small, open-ended, and experimental buildathon. There are no fixed problem statements. Your project can be playful, technically ambitious, scientifically useful, or all three. Your input → Fruit-fly brain mapping → Your output Connect it to a game or robot. Turn neural activity into music or visuals. Build tools to explore how signals move through the brain. Run controlled experiments by activating or removing specific neurons. Investigate whether biological neural architecture can offer useful ideas for AI and robotics. Important distinction: Researchers did not upload a living fly’s consciousness or create a fully functional digital fly. They mapped its physical neural connections, which can be used to build connectome-based controllers. Bring your laptop, curiosity, and any hardware you want to experiment with. 📅 September 20, 2026 ⏰ 10 AM to 6 PM 📍 2586Labs, Bengaluru Some inspiration The fruit-fly connectome announcement What people around the internet have already built

CyberSwaraj: Digital Privacy for Beginners

Bengaluru, India, Bengaluru, India
In person

Forty years later, the feeling he was describing is just daily life. Your phone knows where you slept last night. Your browser knows what you almost bought and changed your mind about. Your keyboard knows what you typed and then deleted. None of this is a secret anymore, it's just something most of us have stopped noticing. If you've ever had a faint sense that something about the internet doesn't feel right anymore, this session is for you. Privacy is not about hiding. Most conversations about privacy start by making you feel paranoid. This one won't. Privacy is something ordinary and human. It's the ability to decide what parts of your life get shared, when they get shared, and with whom. In the physical world this feels obvious. You close the door when you change clothes. You lower your voice in a crowded room. You don't hand your diary to a stranger. Online, we've slowly given up all of that, usually without realising we were giving anything up. Each app asks for a small permission. Each service collects a small piece of information. Individually, none of it feels like much. Put together, it forms a surprisingly complete picture of how you live, think, move, and talk to people you love. This session is a starting point for anyone who has never thought seriously about this before. No cybersecurity jargon. No lectures. Just a clear walkthrough of what's happening, why it matters, and what you can do about it this afternoon. What we'll cover Part 1: Where privacy actually leaks Why "I have nothing to hide" misses the point The difference between privacy, secrecy, and safety How ordinary apps and devices observe and track far more than you think What changes, slowly and invisibly, when people lose their private space Part 2: What you can actually do about it One of our speakers runs an almost entirely open-source setup on his phone. No Google Play Store, no surveillance-heavy apps, just tools built by people who believe your data belongs to you. He'll walk you throu
