HARDWIRED Vol. 03 | Building for Safety-Critical

SEP10
17:30 · Europe / Vienna

About this event

HARDWIRED is the TU Wien Robotics Club's meetup series for the people who actually build things — robots, machines, medical devices, and the systems that aren't allowed to fail.
For Vol. 03 we're guests at the Vienna office of Ketryx. Ketryx builds an AI-native compliance platform for life sciences: automated validation, traceability and FDA/EU-MDR documentation across the entire product lifecycle. Three of the world's five largest medtech manufacturers run on it. Last year the company closed a $39M Series B, with engineering split between Boston and Vienna.
We think that's one of the most interesting problems in deep tech right now, and one most hardware people run into sooner or later: how do you move fast when a bug isn't a bug, but a patient? Regulation is usually treated as the thing that slows engineering down. Ketryx treats it as an engineering problem. That reframing is worth an evening.
What to expect
A talk by Jan Pöschko on building AI-native software for regulated, safety-critical products — and what that means for anyone shipping hardware into the real world
Q&A, no filter
Drinks, pizza, and the part everyone actually comes for: talking to the other people in the room
A look around the Ketryx office
Who this is for
Students, engineers, founders, and anyone building at the intersection of hardware, software and the physical world. You don't need to be a TUWRC member and you don't need a medtech background. Curiosity is the entry requirement.
Doors 17:30 · Talk 18:00 · Open end
Spots are limited by the size of the room, so register early. Free.
HARDWIRED is organised by the TU Wien Robotics Club — 250+ students, one makerspace at the Home of Innovation am Arsenal, and a fairly stubborn belief that Europe should build hardware again.

Guess what topped their list this past year? Broken authorization. This talk will start with the importance of Authorization, and establishes the problems with the status quo. Also covered are the core concepts behind Relationship-Based Access Control aka ReBAC, and SpiceDB - a mature and widely adopted open source ReBAC system inspired by the system internally powering Google services: Zanzibar. The talk will conclude with a demo of how to model real-world systems with SpiceDB and then deploy it on to Kubernetes for global-scale authorization in your application.

When switching costs balloon and migration paths vanish, architectural agility suffers. How do you balance development velocity with long-term technological independence? In this talk, I will break down a pragmatic, 2-step evaluation process used at willhaben to assess third-party solutions before writing a line of integration code. You’ll learn how to implement a practical Service Decision Matrix that quantifies service quality, operational complexity, and operation costs within a realistic vendor lock-in framework. Roland Rittchen \- Senior Platform Engineer at SQUER OpenStack: From Sovereignty to Liberty Europe has spent three years building sovereign cloud. Regulators demand it, the European Commission procures it, and a dozen providers now sell it. But sovereignty answers a question about jurisdiction — and it quietly leaves the harder one unanswered: if you can't actually move, you aren't free. You've just changed who owns you. This talk takes the promise literally and tests it. One OpenTofu repository, one Flux repository, three targets: a self-hosted OpenStack cluster running on three mini PCs, plus two European public clouds. We measure how much genuinely transfers, find the places it leaks, and confront the gap nobody p
