Building Public Truths: Designing Journalism

SEP10
18:30 · Europe / Amsterdam

About this event

In the run-up to the exhibition Building Public Truths , Nieuwe Instituut is organising a programme around the experimental domain of 'live journalism' together with the Goethe-Institut Niederlande, Correctiv, Forensic Architecture, Forensis, the Designing Journalism research group of Fontys Journalism and Control Alt Delete. Under the guidance of lecturer-researcher Jasmijn Apte and investigative journalist and theatre maker Kathlyn Wuyts, participants explore the intersection of reporting, design and performance. Can this alternative artistic-journalistic forum reconcile the truth-finding around themes such as police violence with a safer space for victims and relatives?

Forensic research includes elements from medicine and various social sciences, which are mainly used in criminal cases. The origin of the word 'forensic' lies in the Roman forum, the public space where debates were held and where justice was administered in Antiquity. From that origin, you could stretch contemporary research, discourse and the pursuit of truth again. Under the heading of 'designing journalism', various experts take a closer look at the principles and methods of live journalism. Drawing on their experience and expertise in the press, theatre, human rights activism and design, they explore the forum where reporting and the intricate interplay of victimhood and location-relatedness meet in the media. Based on, among other things, cases involving fatal incidents of police violence, such as the Sammy Baker case, the invited speakers reflect on the potential of live journalism and practical ways to operate within it.
