Talks
Shreya Shankar (CMU): Domain Specific LLM Inference for AI-SQL
Database users have long wanted to query unstructured text, and LLMs have finally made this feasible. Major vendors now support AI-SQL, which adds AI-powered filters, joins, maps, and classifiers to SQL. To execute AI-SQL queries, databases lower these queries into plans with one LLM call per row, or, for joins, per tuple in a cross product. Even after query optimization, hundreds of thousands, or millions, of calls may remain! In theory, inference engines should be fantastic at this workload, because each call is almost entirely prefill and returns only a few tokens. Surprisingly, general-purpose inference engines take far longer than expected, because their KV caches do not know what the query will reuse, and processing so many requests adds high host overhead. We use these limitations to motivate Quail, an open source query engine for AI-SQL that our lab is building. We describe Quail's planner and execution engine, show preliminary exciting results, and end with some exciting open problems (and, a plea for help from inference experts).
Parker Zeigler (UC Berkeley): Interactive, Multimodal Programming Systems
The vast majority of programming systems give developers one modality for writing code: editing text. Text editing is remarkably expressive, but for programming domains with rich visual outputs — such as data visualization, graphics, and image processing — it lacks the live feedback and direct manipulation capabilities that shi

Are We Running Too Many Agents?

Sentry, San Francisco Bay Area, United States
In person

Have you read ETOOMANYTHINGS? Run Fewer Agents, the recent blog post by exe co-founder Josh? Everyone seems to be building software factories these days. The post sparked a fun discussion online, and we thought it would be even more fun to continue the conversation in person. Speakers Josh Bleecher Snyder, co-founder of exe Josh Wills, engineering at DatologyAI Beyang Liu, amplifying human agency at Amp, prev. founder of Sourcegraph This will also be our first "official" exe.dev meetup, and we'd love to meet you all! We'll have a few short, actually technical talks followed by an open Q&A and discussion. Come share your thoughts and hang out with other developers thinking about these problems. Food and drinks sponsored by our friends at Sentry.

How to Get Customers to Actually Pay

San Francisco, CA, San Francisco Bay Area, United States
In person

Product-market fit with Rob Snyder 🍻 Rob Snyder spent two years struggling to find product-market fit. After a last-minute pivot, his startup went from $0 to $4M in annual recurring revenue in the next two years. If you’re doing demo after demo, following up endlessly and still struggling to close, how do you know whether to change your pitch, your product or who you’re selling to? Join Founders on Tap for a workshop with Rob Snyder, founder, product-market fit advisor and author of The Power of PULL. Using his push vs. pull framework, we’ll explore why some sales take constant convincing, how to find customers with a reason to buy now and how to build around what they’re already trying to accomplish. We’ll get into: Why someone can have a problem, like your solution and still never buy. How to spot real demand in customer conversations. What makes your product a priority instead of a “maybe later.” How to turn one customer’s success into something you can repeat. For founders looking for their first paying customers or wondering why every new sale still feels so hard. Bring your questions about your own startup for the Q&A, grab a drink and meet other founders figuring it out alongside you. About the speaker Rob Snyder is a founder, product-market fit advisor and author of The Power of PULL. He grew his first startup from $0 to $4M in annual recurring revenue in two years and developed the PULL framework to help founders understand what makes customers buy. His work focuses on finding real customer demand and using early sales to figure out what a startup can sell repeatedly. What should I expect? 6:30–7:00 PM Arrive, grab a drink and meet a few founders. 7:00–7:45 PM Workshop with Rob Snyder. 7:45–8:05 PM Q&A.
