Lunch & Learn: Inside Nuance Labs’ Push from Research to Market

NOV6
11:30

About this event

Fangchang Ma and Edward Zhang, co-founders of Nuance Labs, just announced a $50 million Series A round last month. Now they're joining us at AI House for a conversation about building a Seattle research lab and taking it to market.
What we'll cover:
Building Nuance Labs: the founding story, product development, and what the team is learning along the way.
From research to GTM: how a research-first team is shifting toward go-to-market.
The tech: a high-level look at how Nuance builds one model for real-time audiovisual conversation.
Who should come:
Seattle founders, builders and technical talent. Capacity is limited, and approval is based on your registration answers.
We track no-shows, and it affects approval for future events. If you can't make it, please cancel your registration in Luma.
Agenda:
1130am - 12pm: Networking and pizza
12pm-1245pm: Fireside chat + Q&A
1245pm-130pm: Networking
About the speakers:
Fangchang Ma (CEO) and Edward Zhang (CTO) worked side by side on applied research at Apple, building core technology and prototyping new experiences across iPhone, Vision Pro and Apple Intelligence. Fangchang holds a PhD in robotics from MIT. Edward holds a PhD in graphics and vision from the University of Washington. They started Nuance on a simple premise: the next leap in AI won't come from what models say, but from how they say it.
About Nuance Labs:
Nuance Labs is a Seattle-based research lab building a foundation model for audiovisual conversation: AI you can see and hear, that listens, reacts and responds in real time. Rather than putting a face on top of a text exchange, Nuance models the full dynamics of human interaction, including timing, backchannels, facial expression and gaze. In September the company raised a $50 million Series A round led by Lightspeed, with participation from Accel, South Park Commons, NVIDIA and Define Ventures.

AI Agents Seattle October

Foundations, Seattle, United States
In person

In October, we are welcoming two speakers Fred Patton, Senior Developer Advocate at Auth0 (Okta) | AI Governance & Ambient Agents. Jacob Matson, AI & Data Advocate at MotherDuck 1. Beyond Permissions: Adaptive Norms for Autonomous Agents We keep trying to govern autonomous agents with permissions, but humans don't simply work from permissions. They work within norms. TL;DR The talk will feature Jev, it'll be a governable AI use case where a rich audit log establishes norms, such that when an agent deviates from that, a human must approve that deviation along with additional context which help determines whether that approval is a exception / one-off, or whether it should be added to the norms so that in future cases, no approval is needed. Full description: The Living Norms demo demonstrates a different model for agent autonomy: agents act independently inside established norms and ask for human authorization only when they encounter a meaningful deviation. Approved exceptions can become bounded precedent, allowing autonomy to expand over time without weakening hard safety boundaries. Most agent deployments tend toward one of two extremes. At one end, a human approves every action. That limits risk, but it also creates a bottleneck, encourages approval fatigue, and eventually turns careful review into routine rubber-stamping. At the other end, the agent receives standing permissions and is allowed to operate on its own. That removes the bottleneck, but gives the agent broad authority regardless of whether a particular action is routine, unusual, or potentially dangerous. Living Norms explores a third approach. Permission is not treated as the same thing as autonomy. An agent may have the ability to perform an action without automatically having the authority to perform it unattended. Inside established norms, the agent can proceed. When it moves outside those norms, it asks a human for narrowly scoped authorization for that specific action. The important part is wha

TLDR; - (Flash round) Who am I? (it's my first talk, so my background may be helpful and I can skip this on request or make it less than 30 seconds) - (Confidentiality) Authentication in real life, and what purpose Python serves in a release process (significance of it, and significance of having something reliable) - (Integrity) PLURR, the significance of trusting the community, and how PSKs can play a role in securing future python pip packages - (Availability) A lack of competition (or a lack of creativity) detracting from giving people new experiences (connecting between raves and CI/CD) I think this is very high-level that's more about programming and raving, and less about Python but still making it about python by showing how to secure systems and rolling releases using Python and touching on pip's \`--require-hashes\`. Talk #2: The Beautiful Improbability of the Real Speaker: Matt Drury Description: Simple coinflip games are proving grounds for our intuition about the nature of random events and govern conclusions we can responsibility draw from data. In this talk we describe the Arcsine Laws, which were described evocatively by William Feller as: > unexpected [and] come as a shock to intuition and common sense. They will reveal that commonly accepted notions concerning chance fluctuations are without foundation and that the implications of the law of large numbers
