AI Agents Seattle October

OCT13
17:30

About this event

In October, we are welcoming Fred Patton, Senior Developer Advocate at Auth0 (Okta) | AI Governance & Ambient Agents.
Beyond Permissions: Adaptive Norms for Autonomous Agents
We keep trying to govern autonomous agents with permissions, but humans don't simply work from permissions. They work within norms.
TL;DR
The talk will feature Jev, it'll be a governable AI use case where a rich audit log establishes norms, such that when an agent deviates from that, a human must approve that deviation along with additional context which help determines whether that approval is a exception / one-off, or whether it should be added to the norms so that in future cases, no approval is needed.
Full description:
The Living Norms demo demonstrates a different model for agent autonomy: agents act independently inside established norms and ask for human authorization only when they encounter a meaningful deviation. Approved exceptions can become bounded precedent, allowing autonomy to expand over time without weakening hard safety boundaries.
Most agent deployments tend toward one of two extremes. At one end, a human approves every action. That limits risk, but it also creates a bottleneck, encourages approval fatigue, and eventually turns careful review into routine rubber-stamping. At the other end, the agent receives standing permissions and is allowed to operate on its own. That removes the bottleneck, but gives the agent broad authority regardless of whether a particular action is routine, unusual, or potentially dangerous.
Living Norms explores a third approach. Permission is not treated as the same thing as autonomy. An agent may have the ability to perform an action without automatically having the authority to perform it unattended. Inside established norms, the agent can proceed. When it moves outside those norms, it asks a human for narrowly scoped authorization for that specific action.
The important part is what happens after approval. A human is not simply saying, “yes, d

Vol 4: Designing with AI

Pioneer Square Labs, Seattle, United States
In person

We're back at Pioneer Square Labs, timed to the Art Walk right after. Three short talks, a panel, and drinks on us. Ana Marini is an education-focused product designer who's been building Lumi, a personal language-learning project, with AI as a design partner. She'll walk through the messy middle of that: what actually happens to your thinking, your judgment, and your creative process when AI becomes part of how you learn and make. Kaelig Deloumeau-Prigent is a design engineering leader who has spent fifteen years building design systems at Shopify, Salesforce, Intuit, and the Financial Times, and co-chairs the W3C Design Tokens Community Group. He'll show how Claude Design, Claude Code, Storybook, and Playwright combine into one agentic workflow that revamps a product's UI from head to toe, design system included, walking through the OpenID Foundation's Conformance Test Suite redesign from user research to the shipped UI. Shuyuan (Sylvia) Ding is a product designer at PenChecks Trust who spent this year going from designer to design engineer, owning both the design and the implementation. She's built a component end to end the way that job works now; AI, engineering collaboration, and QA feedback all in the loop, set against the old model of a detailed handoff and stepping away. Then we open it up. Madison Joslyn moderates a panel with all three presenters, built on your questions. Bring some. Want to present at a future Volume? Get in touch.

Seattle VC Roast & Comedy Night

Seattle, WA, Seattle, United States
In person

About Event For one night only, the power dynamics are changing. Partners from Madrona, PSL, Foundations, and Tola Capital are stepping out from behind the term sheets and onto the roast stage, where professional comedians will spend the evening reminding them that founders have notes, too. More names to come. No keynotes. No pitch competition. No discussion of market timing, founder-market fit, or why "now is the perfect time." Just investors, comedians, cocktails, and a room full of people who know exactly what a polite rejection email looks like. What to Expect Drinks and networking to start, followed by a live roast of Seattle's venture community. Each investor gets a chance to respond. We expect confidence. We do not expect recovery. Who Should Attend Founders, operators, angels, investors, and anyone who enjoys startup culture enough to laugh at it. Presented By J.P. Morgan, Cooley, and KBF Advisory. We are grateful to all three for making the night possible. Founders get the entertainment, investors get the feedback.
