About this event

In collaboration with the Berkeley Gateway Accelerator and COMPASS, Bakar Labs for Energy & Materials is hosting a breakfast networking event on Friday, September 18th, from 9 AM - 11 AM.
This is an exclusive opportunity to network with key players in the deep tech community, including entrepreneurs, investors, researchers, corporate innovators, and government professionals.

We’d love for you to join us to share ideas, discuss industry trends, and build meaningful connections over casual breakfast bites.
About Bakar Labs:
Bakar Labs for Energy & Materials (BL-EM) is an initiative out of UC Berkeley that expands the university's renowned Bakar Bio Labs model beyond biotech into technologies that address planetary health. BL-EM accelerates the commercialization of breakthrough research across diverse areas including, renewable energy systems, materials science, efficient manufacturing methods, food and agricultural production, waste management, and circular economy solutions. BL-EM has an active pilot program designed to provide hands-on support to pre-incorporation spinouts and Pre-Seed to Series A startups, is developing a network of corporate partners driving innovation in their sector, and organizes expert convenings on topics ranging from AI and climate to building innovation.
As part of UC Berkeley's commitment to fostering entrepreneurship and innovation, BL-EM will move into its permanent home at the western entrance of campus, a 145,000 square foot facility scheduled to open in early 2028. The building will include highly flexible wet laboratory and office space and will serve as a dedicated hub for innovation and community with partners from across campus, the National Laboratories, and around the world.

About Berkeley Gateway Accelerator:
The Berkeley Gateway Accelerator is a deep tech accelerator and innovation hub in Downtown Berkeley, built to move breakthrough science from the lab to the market. BGA runs small, high-touch cohorts: a five-month residen

Catie Cuan // Physical AI: Giving AI a Robot Body

Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation, Berkeley, United States
In person

Join us Tuesday, October 27th at 5:30 PM for a talk with Dr. Catie Cuan, entrepreneur, engineer, artist, and pioneer in the emerging field of choreorobotics. Working at the intersection of artificial intelligence, robotics, and human-robot interaction, Catie explores how movement shapes the way we perceive and relate to machines. She is the founder of ART Lab (AI Robot Technology), and has led work across institutions including Stanford University and the Exploratorium, where she served as artist in residence. In her talk, Physical AI: Giving AI a Robot Body, Catie will explore what happens as AI moves beyond screens and into the physical world. As robots become more intelligent, how they move becomes just as important as what they can do. Drawing on her unique background in dance and robotics, she argues that movement is not just functional, but expressive, shaping emotion, trust, and human connection. Through examples from her work, including training robots to improvise, respond to human gestures, and move collectively, she will show how choreography can inform the design of more intuitive, responsive, and human-centered machines. Come experience a glimpse of a future where robots do not just act intelligently, but move with intention, awareness, and a sense of presence that changes how we live alongside them. This event is free and open to the public. .................... Design Field Notes is a lecture series where we invite the public to the UC Berkeley campus for conversations with designers, makers and artists who are contributing to shaping the future through design. If you require accommodation for a disability for effective communication (ASL interpreting/CART captioning, alternative media formats, etc.) or information about campus mobility access features in order to fully participate in this event, please contact Jacobs Institute staff at jacobsinstitute@berkeley.edu with as much advance notice as possible and at least 7-10 days in advance of the even

Dawn Danby & David McConville // Planetary Repair, Shared Futures

Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation, Berkeley, United States
In person

Join us Tuesday, November 17 at 5:30 PM for a talk with Dawn Danby and David McConville, co-founders of Spherical, an integrative research and design studio working to regenerate the health and integrity of Earth’s living systems. Through design, research, and technology, Spherical explores how human systems are embedded within larger ecological, cultural, and planetary webs of relation, and how new forms of infrastructure might support reciprocal relationships with the living Earth. In this talk, Dawn and David will examine how climate action is often made politically viable through the language of infrastructure, and why that framing is both necessary and incomplete. Rather than treating infrastructure as a purely technical system, they will argue for a broader understanding that includes the nested scales, living relations, and more-than-human worlds that sustain life. Drawing on their work across ecological design, planetary systems, and media arts, they will explore how climate solutions demand new ways of seeing, mapping, and designing in relation to the Earth. Attendees will be invited to rethink infrastructure not simply as built form, but as a living scaffold for reciprocal care, repair, and transformation. This talk is open to the public and is for designers, researchers, students, and anyone interested in climate, systems thinking, and the role of design in shaping more livable futures. ....................
