Junior Board Members: Get on the Board

A Weekly Boardroom and Business Incubator for Kids Ages 8–14

SURF is opening its startup community to the next generation.

For years, adults have come to SURF Incubator to build companies, test ideas, solve problems, meet collaborators, and learn from other founders.
Now, Seattle’s young people get that opportunity too.

Junior Board Members is a weekly, hands-on business incubator where kids can develop real businesses, products, services, inventions, books, games, media concepts, community initiatives, and other creative projects—inside an actual Seattle startup incubator.

Big Ideas Start Young

What Is Junior Board Members?

Junior Board Members combines a real business incubator with a kid-friendly board meeting.

Participants may bring something they are already building or use their first few meetings to discover what interests them.

They may

Build an ongoing business or creative project
Start something completely new
Explore several possible ideas
Join another member’s project
Bring a question or problem to the board
Experiment until they discover something they genuinely want to pursue

This is not a traditional class where every child completes the same assignment.

Some members may spend several months developing one business.
Others may explore different ideas, change direction, collaborate with another member, or complete one project and begin another.

Participants may attend once, join us occasionally, or return every week to continue building.

What Can Junior Board Members Work On?
Members may:

Brainstorm business and project ideas
Develop products and services
Create names, brands, logos, advertisements, and prototypes
Explore pricing, costs, revenue, profit, and budgeting
Develop books, shows, games, channels, and other media concepts
Practice marketing, public speaking, selling, and pitching
Research customers and competitors
Test ideas and collect feedback
Solve problems with help from

AI Agents Seattle September

Foundations, Seattle, United States
In person

We will have 2 talks: 1. Graph Memory for Agents - from GraphRAG, to a graph of everything! | Jeremy Adams @ Neo4j Knowledge graphs have been earning their keep in recommendation, fraud detection, and analytical systems for almost two decades. With the rise of generative AI and agents, graphs are back in the spotlight as one of the best structures for delivering grounded context and memory to LLMs. One of the reasons for this is that unlike black-box methods like fine-tuned LLMs and vector search, graph retrieval is transparent and explainable. Beyond that, used correctly, graph's boost accuracy of generated responses compared to semantic search alone. And of course they feel familiar: quite similar to how we often organize information in a mind map or wiki. We'll dive into how graphs can represent knowledge, memory, and even become a map of your whole organization. 2. Codemode - The only tool your agent needs | Avery Townsend & Aaron Villalpando @ Boundary (creators of BAML) Tool calling is great, but still deterministic. Agent are amazing at writing code, so what happens, if an agent just creates its own tools on the fly? This is exactly how claude ultracode works. This talk will share how to do this, the dangers, and the safeguards you can put in place, so your agents works like magic. Speakers: Jeremy Adams (Sr Developer Advocate @ Neo4j Jeremy's technical and strategic streaks have taken him from startups to tech giants, in roles bridging technology, community, and customers. These days, he's focused on the intersection of developers, graphs, and AI. He's passionate about people, entrepreneurship, integration, and automation. Through roles at Neo4j, Dagger, GitHub, Twistlock, and Puppet, Jeremy has spent a lot of time zooming in and out—from hands-on technical details to architecture, strategy, and business. Along the way, he's developed an appreciation for how the pieces fit together, and for what it takes to turn technology into something people can actually

Knowing When to Pivot. A Fireside Chat & Workshop for Women in Tech

999 3rd Ave, Seattle, United States
In person

Knowing When to Pivot A Fireside Chat & Workshop for Women in Tech With Leslie Chen, founder of Leslie Chen Coaching, and Sally Revell, founder of GenerativeHuman.AI Some of the biggest moments in our careers and lives come down to one simple question: is it time to pivot? Join us for an evening built around exactly that question. Whether you are sensing a shift coming or you are already standing at the edge of one, this is a space to think it through with other women who get it. What to Expect: We will start with a 20-minute fireside chat where Leslie and Sally share the reality of their own major life and career pivots. They will talk about choosing courage over comfort and the messy reality of jumping before feeling fully ready. Then, we move into an interactive workshop where we will discuss: The signs that it is time for a change, especially the ones you keep talking yourself out of. How to take the first step with confidence. Ways to ensure your next move aligns with your values, rather than just what looks good on a resume. Who This Is For: Women in tech who feel stuck, uninspired, or ready for a new challenge. Leaders and founders debating a major career transition or life change. Anyone who wants to make a career move based on internal values rather than external expectations. Who This Is Not For: Those wanting a passive, listen-only lecture. We expect attendees to participate, reflect, and share. What You Will Walk Away With: Clarity: A better understanding of your own readiness for change. Actionable steps: the starting point for making your next move. Connection: New relationships with a community of ambitious women facing similar choices. Agenda Light bites and beverages will be provided. 6:00 PM: Doors open for food, drinks, and mingling. 6:30 PM: Fireside chat with Leslie and Sally. 6:50 PM: Interactive workshop and group exercises. 8:00 PM: Q&A and final wrap-up. 8:30 PM: Event concludes.
