Grant Witness: An R-Powered Research and Advocacy Enterprise

Kimball, New York City, United States · New York Open Statistical Programming Meetup
In person

External registration required at nyhackr. This month we have Noam Ross returning to discuss Federal grant monitoring. Thank you to NYU for hosting us. Everybody attending must RSVP through the registration form at nyhackr. There is a charge for in-person and virtual tickets are free. Space is extremely limited and in-person registration closes at 3 PM the day of the talk. About the Talk: Grant Witness is an organization tracking the changes in federal science and health funding under the Trump administration. At the heart of our project is a team collaborating via a modern R stack for web scraping, data warehousing, analysis, modeling and publishing. This stack produces an authoritative, dollar by dollar and contract by contract database and a steady drumbeat of analyses highlighting the government's unlawful actions. Grant Witness data has been shown in Congressional hearings, cited by federal judges, and used to power advocacy campaigns, inform plaintiff recruitment, and support court filings. Our work appears in over 500 news articles. I will show the data tools our team has stood up to produce trustworthy data and reproducible research that responds to government at the speed of advocacy and journalism. About Noam: Noam Ross is co-founder of Grant Witness, a nonprofit project tracking government funding terminations and policy. He also serves as director of rOpenSci, where he has spent a decade leading R package peer review. He is a researcher studying and forecasting emerging infectious diseases, and advises on statistical and computational methods for predicting outbreaks. The venue doors open at 6:30 PM America/NewYork where we will continue enjoying pizza together (we encourage the virtual audience to have pizza as well). The talk, and livestream, begins at 7:00 PM America/NewYork. Remember, register at nyhackr.

Claude Code Workshop with Provectus - New York City

New York, NY, New York City, United States
In person

Learn to orchestrate AI agents that write and ship code for you. Claude Code is already changing how the best engineering teams ship. This workshop, presented with Provectus, is a chance to build with it directly — not watch a demo, not sit through slides about it. You'll leave having shipped something real, with a working sense of how to bring this back to your own team. We'll spend a little time on context — how Claude Code fits into modern engineering workflows and where teams are seeing the biggest wins. Then the slides go away, and you're at a build station with Anthropic and Provectus beside you, orchestrating agents that write and ship code while you direct the work. Why attend Ship real output. Your agents write the code — you direct them. You'll leave with something you actually built, not a slide deck about what's possible. See best practices in action. Learn how Claude Code fits into enterprise workflows, from the people who deploy it at scale. Get direct support. Live help at every table from Anthropic engineers and Provectus partners — no one gets stuck on an error alone. Build your network. Spend the afternoon with technical leaders wrestling with the same questions you are. Who should attend Engineering Leaders — EMs, VPs, CTOs, Platform Leads, Principal Engineers Business Leaders — CPOs, Digital Transformation, senior AI sponsors, PMs You don't need to be an engineer. If you're making decisions about AI investment or setting strategy, understanding what Claude Code actually does is the edge. Agenda 1:00 PM - 1:30 PM: Registration & setup support 1:30 PM - 2:00 PM: Welcome, Claude Code overview, demo 2:00 PM - 4:30 PM: Build session: hands-on with Claude Code 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM: Networking Happy Hour What to bring Your laptop — Basic comfort with a terminal or code editor is helpful but not required — you'll be directing AI agents and building alongside them, and our team supports you the whole way.
